Mechanical Design Engineer

A Mechanical Design Engineer is required to join us at Oxford Cryosystems – one of the leading and best established businesses in West Oxfordshire.

We are searching for a proactive and driven Mechanical Design Engineer with experience of engineering design projects in the scientific instrumentation or medical devices sectors. As the ideal candidate, you’ll be part of a team responsible for the development of new and existing products including products destined for one of the largest science experiments in the world. As an experienced engineer, you’ll be comfortable within a small team and have the experience to drive your tasks and projects forward to completion.

The business exports more than 90% of its products to territories around the world, working with customers from the west coast of the United States to China and Japan. We continue to enjoy sustained growth and are now investing in the development of existing and new products as our business moves forward in existing and into new markets.

Desirable Skills and Experience

You will have a track record of project work and working within or leading a small team.
You will have experience with prototype and pre-prototype assembly and of the testing of your designs.
You will need to be comfortable with 3D modelling software, however, software-specific training will be provided, where necessary.
Design work experience within the scientific instrumentation or medical devices community will be essential for this role.
An understanding of cryogenic and vacuum systems is desirable.

As a person, it is expected that you’ll be driven to complete all tasks you are working on. You will also have good problem-solving skills, an ability to communicate both with suppliers and internally at all levels and be organised enough to take on a number of projects at any one time. We expect you to be self-motivated to see your work through to completion.


It is expected that you will have a Bachelors Degree in Mechanical Engineering or similar discipline or HNC/HND with commercial experience gained in a relevant technical, engineering or design discipline.

Salary for this position is in the range of £32000 to £45000 depending on experience. Additional benefits include a salary linked Profit Share Scheme and an Auto Enrolment Pension Scheme.
