Cryo Accessories : top hats, pins & bases
Nickel top hats
These top hats are constructed from nickel to avoid rust and are ideal for use with commercially available and home-made loops.
- Their rounded tops provide a smooth and turbulent free path for the nitrogen gas stream
- A perpendicular breath hole means the top hats can be clamped to the top of a cryovial and still retain a path through which the nitrogen gas can breathe
- Flat side so they can be easily and safely gripped by tweezers
- Thin metal pin to reduce turbulence and icing

Stainless steel pins
The design of these pins makes mounting the loops easier and the construction assists to minimise icing. These pins are ‘Cryostream friendly’ and features include:
- 3mm support base for the needle
- 0.5mm hollow in the needle into which the loop can be mounted
- Small diameter to minimise turbulence in the nitrogen stream
- Stainless steel construction creates a conducting path across the cold nitrogen/warm dry air boundary for non-collinear geometries, an important factor in preventing ice formation
- Overall height of loop can be adjusted by pushing the pin base further into the top hat and retaining it with the grub screw
- IUCr Standard pin Reference
Acta. Cryst. 9 976 (1956)
Slot for pin - 3.18/3.19mm (0.1250/0.1255")
Diameter of pin - 3.16/3.15mm (0.1245/0.1240")

Magnetic base
The magnetic base provides a means of holding the top hats accurately on the Goniometer Head. The base consists of a small magnetic surface on a stainless steel base.
- Fits into all IUCr standard goniometer heads
- The magnet is strong enough to hold the top hat but not so strong that the experimenter loses control of the top hat as it nears the magnet and risks losing a vital crystal
- Centred on the magnetic base with an alignment nipple
- Rounded alignment nipple to prevent the top hat from being 'snapped' onto place
