What do we do?

We are often asked the question, “So what does Oxford Cryosystems actually do?”

For those outside the fields of cryocrystallography and GM coolers, our product range may seem a little bewildering at first glance, but in fact, it’s quite simple.

Oxford Cryosystems is a market-leading UK manufacturer of highly specialised scientific instruments and software. The company originated in a laboratory of Oxford University in the 1980s and has since grown into a high-tech, commercial organisation with three distinct product lines, twenty staff and an annual turnover in the millions of pounds.

Science remains at the heart of the Oxford Cryosystems business. Its very-low-temperature cooling devices enable researchers to analyse the structure of molecules – and thus discover important new properties. In addition, new applications are constantly being found for Oxford Cryosystems technology, such as cooling high-precision electronic equipment.

To date, Oxford Cryosystems products have contributed to advances in fields as diverse as pharmaceuticals, telecoms, green energy and astronomy. Customers include universities, high-tech manufacturers, drugs companies and research institutes throughout the world. In fact, more than 80% of production is currently exported. However, at least 90% of the company’s suppliers are British-based – and all manufacturing still takes place in Oxfordshire, just a few miles from the laboratory where it all began.
